In proud partnership with TABOO - help us eradicate Period Poverty
Significant Other have partnered with TABOO’s ‘Pad-it-forward’ initiative, which provides support to menstruators experiencing period poverty in Australia. On behalf of every customer on shopsignificantother.com, between October 11th and November 11th 2021, we will be donating a pack of period products to support someone experiencing, or at risk of, period poverty while they are bleeding.
What is Period Poverty?
Period Poverty refers to the experience where someone cannot access or afford appropriate period products or education. An experience that far too many people are familiar with, both in Australia and globally. It's reported that over 800 million women are currently living in period poverty around the world.
Why is it important?
Those experiencing period poverty encounter various physical, mental and social consequences. When menstruators don't have access to period products, their school and work attendance can be affected. They can encounter severe health and reproductive issues by using alternative materials (e.g., old socks, mattress rippings), and shame and embarrassment experienced.
TABOO are an Australian social enterprise dedicated to eradicating period poverty through systematic and social change. Their 'Pad-it-forward' program allows you to purchase TABOO period products on behalf of those who need them most in Australia, and ensure they reach the right menstruators through partnerships with local organisations and charities. To address period poverty in Developing Countries, TABOO is partnered with OneGirl, an organisation that supports girls and women in Sierra Leonne and Uganda in attending school and work, and in providing menstrual health care education and products. As per the social enterprise model, 100% of TABOO’s net profits are donated to OneGirl.
With support from our staff, management and founders we have made a commitment as a company to work strategically towards supporting causes and organisations focused on empowering women across the world. October 11th is recognised worldwide as the ‘International Day of the Girl Child’, and focuses attention on the challenges girls face, while working to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights around the world. We have chosen this instrumental day to begin our partnership with TABOO, but are committed to supporting these causes across the year.
